Android: Google to protect children from inappropriate content in Android Apps

Google is to age-rate its Android apps to protect children and teens from inappropriate content. Android developer Eric Chu, writing on the Android blog, said: ‘We will be showing content ratings for all applications on Android Market. ‘The content policy remains the same as before: applications will be rated according to four content rating levels: All, Pre-teen, Teen, and Mature.’

Chu said that developers submitting new or updated applications must include a rating for all applications and games. Any apps that don’t show a rating once the system is live will be rated as ‘mature’.

Apps that include mild cartoon or fantasy violence will be rated ‘Pre-Teen’ or above, according to the policy. Realistic or intense fantasy violence will be rated ‘Teen’ or above. Graphic violence should be rated ‘Mature’. Hate speech is also banned in Android Market, the company says. Developers are also advised that any inflammatory content be rated ‘Teen’ or above. In addition apps rated as suitable for “All” must not include user-generated content or ask for a user’s location.
